Refik Başaran

He was born in 1907 in Taşkın Paşa (Damsa) village of Ürgüp, Nevşehir. At the age of 17, she married Fadime Hanım and had three children. Part of his short life was spent abroad. He worked as a financial artist at the Ankara radio house. Being a good commentator, Başaran had a very strong memory, and by memorizing the folk songs he had compiled around him, turning them into records in Istanbul, he prevented them from disappearing and helped them to pass from generation to generation. He read his first stone plaque in 1935.

Some of his works, which have filled approximately 70 plaques, are Ürgüp, Hüdayda, Bridge Passed Bride, Karadır Kaşların, Seher Yeli, Bridges Made, Gurbet Hands. It is said that he died in 1945, although it is not certain. Refik, who was eager to play and sing at a young age, started playing the saz at the age of fourteen or fifteen. He went to the remote village of Kavak in Yeşilhisar and took lessons from someone called Hasan, who was good at saz, a Turkish instrument. Refik, who made great progress in playing saz in a short time, became famous in weddings in the village and its surroundings.

He performed his military service in Kütahya and Niğde. Refik, whose reputation increased after his military service, was invited to a meeting in Ankara by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Atatürk gave Refik the surname "Başaran" in this meeting with the leading artists of the time.

He died in a foreign country. The cause of death is definitely unknown.
